Voice as relational tool for spatial-material sensibility
Our voice extends from within us to the people, agents and environments outside us, and in doing so, becomes a way of relating to them. In doing so, it connects with the material and immaterial, the interior and exterior. It simultaneously inhabits multiple subjectivities, and if we become aware of its impact, it affords decentred, material awareness of space. It simultaneously detects and responds to spatial characteristics such as reverberation. Voice can be performative. It is visceral, it communicates our emotions, our character, our vulnerabilities. In this course, voice is used to explore the inter-subjective nature of space and materiality. It is explored as a tool – carried everywhere – to know the internal and external realities and connect the self with the non-self of buildings, materials, other people, and non-humans. This is a exploration of deep listening practices which cross liminal spaces to reveal us to ourselves, and in doing so, reveals ‘others’ to us.
