Political aesthetics: noise, glitch & failure

Information theory has defined noise as unwanted information in a communication – information that exceeds the desired signal. Erasing noise was pursued in the quest for ‘ideal’ communication, though we don’t have to think hard about the political dimensions of the erasure of unwanted signals. The very loss of control that ‘imperfect’ communication embodies became an aesthetic for artists, from the use of stochastic principles in composition, to glitch music and live coding. Simulation of the real can be aesthetically superseded by aesthetic practices which uphold continence, ambiguity, dynamic and fractured non-linear systems. Drawing from Ranciere’s appraisal of art and politics commonalities (divisions of visibility/ invisibility, audibility/ inaudibility and the inaudible, and so on), as well as thinkers such as Deleuze (art as always-already political), this course examines the politics of aesthetic tropes, ideals and principles, in terms of their socio-historical evolution and the counter-cultures which inevitably accompany mainstream artistic practice.
